Lowchen

You are welcome to print this flyer (back to back works well) to utilize for identification purposes in shelters or rescue efforts.

A Lowchen is a small, compact, sturdy and solid dog that generally stands 12" to 14" high at the shoulders and weighs between 12 and 16 pounds. Females are slightly smaller. There are variations within the breed and some Lowchen are smaller than 12 inches and some are larger than 14 inches.

Lowchen can come in any color combination and are rarely one solid color. Unless the puppies are parti-colored, sable or white, they are born solid black and start to change color within a few days. However, it may take a few years for the color to develop into its final hue. In the Black/Tans the black marking often disappears from the facial region which goes quite pale. You can see this in the pictures of Adam below as he matures.

The main characteristics of the breed are their wide topskull. Their body is also rather squarish in appearance. Their boning on the forelegs is also in keeping with their size, not heavy or thick. They do not have bowing in their front legs.

The Lowchen muzzle tapers towards the nose leather, and is not thick or squared off. This lack of bluntness is especially seen in dogs that have their coat clipped.

Most people who keep their lowchens as pets keep them in a puppy cut while those that are shown are kept in the lion cut.
